The Rise of the Ascended
Book III · The Seven Gather
Power does not corrupt. It reveals. Vael and Lyren entered Codetharis, the city where the Algorithm Priests had spent four centuries rewriting the chains the gods had left behind. Their leader, Varethos, believed he was fixing the world. The world disagreed.
In the streets of Codetharis, a boy named Nael carried a fragment of a goddess he had never met. Then a second. Then a third. He was the only carrier in the cosmos to hold more than one. He did not understand why. He only knew that the warmth in his chest was louder than other people's, and that when he was quiet enough, he could hear it humming.
Beyond the city walls, in villages where the Forgetting still ruled, people walked through lives they could no longer feel. They greeted strangers as friends. They forgot the names of their children. The Forgetting had not ended. It had only paused, the way a wound pauses before bleeding again.
Seven fragment carriers found each other in this age. Vael, the first. Lyren, who carried symbols before she carried fragments. Nael, who carried three. Kael, met in Lumenar, silent from a scar he could not yet speak about. Rael, found at the forge in Kaelthar, hammering metal that sang under his hands. Sera, the Veil Merchant, who arrived without announcement the way Veil Merchants always did. And Koss and Mira, the Unbound Blades, twin carriers with weapons that had been waiting for them.
Somewhere in the Broken Zone, Vorak waited with a truth no one was ready to hear. He had always known the Scattering would lead here. He had been the one who recognized what Calipso did when she did it. Now he sat in his domain of entropy and warmth, watching the seven approach, and preparing himself to say what he had carried alone for an age.
The Scattering's purpose revealed itself. The fragments had never been lost. They had been placed. They had been waiting. And now, in the chamber at the heart of the Broken Zone, the seven were asked to say one word. They said it. Together. And the cosmos began to remember.
"Seven will gather. Seven will carry. Seven will be asked to say one word. The Chain does not break. It only changes shape."
