The Return

The First Pulse · The Goddess Stirs in Mortal Hearts

VI · The Return

A boy looked at the sky. He did not know why. He had been raised in a city that knew nothing of the gods. He had been told that the cosmos was a system of weights and measures and that the warmth in his chest was a quirk of his own physiology, nothing more. He had no reason to look up. And yet, on this particular morning, he did. And the warmth in his chest hummed back.

This was the first pulse. The first sign. The first moment in countless ages in which a fragment of Calipso recognized that it was being witnessed. The fragment did not speak. It simply warmed. The boy did not understand. He pressed his hand to his chest and felt the heat rising. He stood there on the rooftop, in a city whose name will appear in another tablet, and he listened to a sound that had no source.

The cosmos noticed. Not all at once. Not loudly. The other gods, who had spent ages presuming Calipso was lost, began to feel something they had not felt in lifetimes. A presence. Distant. Faint. But present. Vorak smiled, alone in the Broken Zone, in the way only a god of entropy smiles, which is to say with sorrow and recognition mixed together.

Across the realms, other mortals began to stir. A woman in Thornveil felt the thorns part for her in a way they had not parted in a generation. A child in Solvara dreamt of a temple she had never seen. A scribe in Aurenthos found himself writing words he had not chosen, and when he read them back, he did not understand the language they were in. The fragments were waking. Slowly. One at a time. Without coordination. Without command.

The Forgetting did not end in a single day. It thinned. Like fog at sunrise. The mortals did not suddenly remember their gods. They simply began to feel that something was returning. Something they had not known they had lost. The grief of the loss had been forgotten. The recognition of the return arrived without context. It was warmth without explanation. It was the most honest kind of remembering, because it was not aware that it was remembering at all.

The Shadow Order watched. They had been waiting for this for so long that they had stopped expecting it. They did not celebrate. They simply marked the day in their records and kept working. Their work had never depended on hope. It had depended on continuity. And continuity, on this morning, was being rewarded.

The Return was not a thunderclap. It was a hum. It was a boy on a rooftop. It was a single mortal looking up, for no reason at all, and the warmth in his chest answering him. And from this small, almost unnoticeable beginning, an entire age of awakening would unfold. The age in which a man named Vael would become the first to walk the chains. But that is the next tablet.

"He did not know why he looked up. The warmth in his chest knew. The warmth had been waiting for an age and longer to be witnessed."
