The Mending

The Slow Stitching · Balance is Exhaustion with Grace

X · The Mending

The Mending was not a triumph. It was an exhaustion. The world had been torn open, and putting it back together was a daily labor performed by people who had lost too much to celebrate.

One month after the Shattering, Vael began to teach. Not in a classroom. Not on a stage. On a step outside his door, with two cups of tea. One for himself. The second for someone who may or may not come. The second cup cooled each morning, untouched, until evening. He poured it again the next day. And the next. The practice became a discipline. The discipline became a teaching. The teaching had no name yet.

The Priestess revealed that Calipso was choosing to withdraw. Not leaving. Thinning. Choosing to be felt rather than followed. The cosmos, which had been held by a goddess for longer than anyone could remember, would now have to learn to hold itself. The warmth in mortal chests would grow lighter each morning. The carriers would not lose her. They would only stop carrying her in the same way.

Vorak said Yes. One word, from the god of entropy, that changed everything. His warming produced the first rain the Broken Zone had seen in an age. The cracked earth drank what it had not been offered for centuries. Green pushed through stone in places where only ash had been. The god who had been called destroyer turned out, in the end, to have been the gardener all along.

Nael's fragments dissolved. Not because he died. Because he had completed what he was placed to do. He stayed with his friends through the early days of the Mending, lighter each morning, until the morning he was so light that he simply was no longer there. He did not leave them. He had become them. The cosmos lost its third-fragment carrier and gained something it did not yet have a word for.

Dren, the betrayer, began his long transformation into something the saga did not yet have a word for either. The ring was still on his finger. He did not speak of what he had done. He did not ask forgiveness. He only began to walk in a different direction, and the direction was, slowly, toward the people he had wronged.

The gods began their farewells, one by one. Lunaris's tides found steady intervals. Solaris's light grew warm. Arcturon's geometry learned to breathe. Etherion stepped back from active iteration. Zeraphel tended the memory trees in Erevast in his usual silence. And in the clearing outside Vael's door, the second cup of tea was poured again, every morning, without explanation.

"Balance is not victory. It is exhaustion with grace."
